How to support us
Financial donations - Financial donations are always appreciated. You can support the below-listed interventions we provide to our amputees for free:
a) Amputee peer-counselling program: this involves professional training programs for amputees who can become a Certified Amputee Peer-Counsellor (APC). The work of the amputee peer counsellor is to provide counselling or emotional support to individuals who have been scheduled to undergo a form of amputation. In reality, the APC journeys with the yet-to-be amputee through the amputation period, the prosthetic rehabilitation process and the community reintegration stage. The goal of the APC is to help the individual get back into society with a better mindset and with mind tools to handle any form of stigmatization at the personal, family and community levels.
b) Community amputee education program: this program includes scheduled community symposiums to discuss relevant issues relating to life after amputation. Some of the topics discussed are stigmatization, dealing with depression, adapting to work as an amputee, disability rights and laws in Ghana, physical exercise for amputees, diabetes, and how to improve your mobility with a prosthesis.
c) Economic empowerment program: with this program, we provide entrepreneurial skills to amputees who because of their amputation cannot return to their previous work or amputees with no specific entrepreneurial skills. About 80% of amputees we work with are hugely dependant on other people for basic support. This over-dependence leads to low self-esteem and limited ability to pursue personal dreams, thus, low quality of life. We believe that the best way to address this problem is to equip amputees with relevant skills that can be used for economic gains. We do not stop at providing entrepreneurial skills but we go a step further to provide start-up capital in the form of equipment, tools and materials needed to set up a functioning business with the potential for scale-up.
