Overview

Smiles of Hope is an organisation that promotes amputee rehabilitation by establishing local amputee-peer support groups. With these groups, amputees come together to receive education, empowerment, and encouragement. Our goal is to learn about the challenges of being an amputee, how to support amputees as a caregiver, and how using a prosthesis can help an amputee to walk again. We achieve this goal by organising local community discussions with amputees and their caregivers. Over the past few years, we have mastered the art of creating conducive spaces for amputees to share their experiences and learn from their peers through experience sharing. For our approach, we leverage focused group discussions led by professionals who work in the disability-rehabilitation sector.

Why is this important to us?

Before embarking on this mission, we found that amputees often receive limited or no education, psychological support and guidance not only on life after amputation but also on getting ready to be amputated. Some people believe that there is no meaningful life after amputation or that amputees are somehow less than other human beings. We believe that these misconceptions have held many amputees back and our organisation is committed to addressing and dispelling these misunderstandings, to help amputees find hope.
